Cycle 2 Status Update

The ALMA project has published its latest observing status report. The report can be found here. It includes information on the status of Cycle 2 Early Science observations (including those projects transferred from Cycle 1) and a summary of observing intentions for the rest of Cycle 2 and its likely progress through the remaining high priority projects.

 

UK ALMA Science Meeting

First Announcement

30-31 March 2015

 We are pleased to make the first announcement of the UK ALMA Science Meeting, to take place at JBCA from the 30th to 31st March 2015, (after the ALMA Cycle 3 call for proposals and a few weeks before the deadline). The meeting is intended to present the science results of ALMA projects conducted by UK PIs/Co-Is in all the diverse areas of astronomy ALMA is opening up to the community. The schedule will feature both invited and submitted presentations and take place over two days. During the meeting and afterward the UK ARC Node staff will be available to help people with their ALMA Cycle 3 proposals. Registration and talk title/abstract submission will become available in the coming weeks.

Following the science meeting the UK ARC Node will also be hosting a radio interferometry school. More details for this school will also become available in the coming weeks.

 

HL Tau: Spectacular image from the ALMA Long Baseline Campaign

As part of the ALMA Long Baseline Campaign, ALMA recently released an image of the disc around the sun-like star HL Tau. In this spectacular image the disc is found to be made up of a series of bright rings and dark gaps. These gaps are interpreted as having been vacated of dust by planets forming around the young (1 million year old) HL Tau. The full press release can be found here.
