Cycle 7 Proposal statistics

The JAO has now released a detailed report on the statistics from the Cycle 7 call for proposals. A total of 1785 proposal, slightly fewer than in the previous Cycle, were submitted. These proposals requested over 19,000 hours observing on the 12m array with the median requested 12m array program length of 8.9h (excluding large proposals). Bands 3, 6 and 7 were the most requested bands this cycle. Oversubscription rates vary between Europe, North America, East Asia and Chile, with Europe having rate of 5.8, 3.2 and 2.3 on the 12m array, 7m array and total power telescopes respectively. These are again fractionally lower than in Cycle 6. The full report can be found on the ALMA Portal.

UK ARC Node at NAM

The UK ARC Node will be present at this years National Astronomy Meeting (Lancaster University: 30th June - 4th July 2019) as part of the JBCA's Interferometry Centre of Excellence (ICE) stand. Staff from the ARC Node will be on hand during the meeting to answer any ALMA related questions you may have or to discuss organising workshops at your institution. Please come along and say hello.

e-MERLIN Cycle 9 Call for Proposals

e-MERLIN requests proposals from the international astronomical community for observations to be made during Cycle-9. Proposals are competitively peer-reviewed under standard STFC rules by the PATT e-MERLIN Time Allocation Committee. Allocation will be made on the basis of scientific merit and technical feasibility alone. During e-MERLIN operations ~50% of observing time has been allocated to large legacy projects and the remaining formal time will be allocated via PATT to standard proposals solicited prior to each observing semester.

e-MERLIN Science: e-MERLIN observations address a broad range of http://www.e-merlin.ac.uk/science.html and its unique combination of angular resolution (mas) and sensitivity (microJy) provide crucial insights in multiple science areas. See the full call for proposals for more details.

IRAM 30m Summerschool 2019

06-09 September 2019

Pradollano, Spain

Website

The 9th IRAM 30m summerschool will combine lectures on millimeter astronomy with observations using the 30m telescope. Lectures will be given by experienced scientists and 30m observers, covering a range of topics, from comets and planetary atmospheres in the solar system to the study of the chemistry of interstellar clouds, low and high mass star formation, in the Milky Way, in nearby galaxies, and in ultra-luminous objects at high-redshifts.

These lectures will be complemented by shorter lectures on instrumentation, observing techniques, and data processing. The school is aimed at attracting new astrophysicists to current and future single-dish millimeter and submillimeter facilities. And, the school is primarily meant for young scientists with little previous experience in mm-astronomy. It is limited to about 40 students who will be selected on the basis of their interests, experience, and references.

From Gas to Stars: The Links between Massive Star and Star Cluster Formation

September 16-20 2019

Yorkshire Museum, York UK

Website

The organisers are pleased to announce a conference on the formation and early evolution of massive star clusters. The aim of the conference is to bring together the communities who study the properties of the natal giant molecular clouds, with those who study the stellar populations. The conference will combine observational and theoretical aspects, with topics including:

  • The global picture of young star clusters and giant molecular clouds in the Galaxy.
  • Properties of star forming clouds.
  • Evolution of molecular clouds: feedback and dissipation.
  • Population and structures of young clusters and OB associations.
  • Dynamics of young clusters and OB associations.
  • Protostars in clusters.

The abstract submission deadline is 30th June 2019, and the registration deadline is 31st July 2019.
